Manchester United could end their chase for Barcelona centre-back Thomas Vermaelen despite links stating that they were keen on bring him to Old Trafford on a season long loan, Daily Mail reports.
Louis van Gaal was believed to be looking at the 29-year-old as extra reinforcements to his injury struck back line, but after learning that he may go under the knife, all potential moves is likely to be off.
Vermaelen was close to a switch to United in the summer, but Arsene Wenger rejected the deal in hopes he could negotiate a swap deal for Chris Smalling, and luckily Van Gaal is now able to avoid yet another injury concern.
Barca staff revealed that his return to full fitness could once again be slowed as they are currently monitoring his situation before deciding if he needs surgery.
“We are worried for him and the medical staff are evaluating what’s best,” said Barca sports director Andoni Zubizarreta.
“We don’t know if Vermaelen is now going to need surgery. We are studying the situation.”
