After losing two centre-backs in the match against Manchester City, returning Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has revealed he will play centre-back if he has to, Express reports.
Chris Smalling was sent off meaning he will not feature against Crystal Palace next weekend while Marcos Rojo dislocated his shoulder and could be out for a while depending on the results of his check up.
The pair joins Rafael, Phil Jones, and Jonny Evans on the sidelines as Carrick admits that he can play as a defender if he is called upon by Louis van Gaal.
“It was my first game back in six months, since the end of last season, so it was a bit of test for me to come on at centre-half,” he said. “I enjoyed it, it was nice to be back and I have certainly missed it, being out for so long.
“We will see who is fit and who we can patch up for next week. I’ve played there two, three or four times in a season but it is not a position I’ve played an awful lot.
“If I need to play there then fine. I have not had a lot of football recently so I will play anywhere. I don’t mind.
“We have different options and can play different formations we have a good variety. Now we just need to get players fit and have more options to choose from.”
