Man United have received a transfer blow in the chase for Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij, who will join Lazio in a £6.7million deal, Daily Mail reports.
De Vrij has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in order to reunite with Holland boss Louis van Gaal, but has ending speculation after agreeing to join Serie A side Lazio.
Feyenoord confirmed yesterday the centre-back will make a £6.7million move to Italy.
This will come as a major blow in Vaan Gaal’s plans to shore up the United back-line after the departures of centre-back duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic along with left-back Patrice Evra.
De Vrij was one of the standout performers for Holland’s 3rd place finish in the World Cup, starting every game for the current United boss.
The 22-year-old’s versatility would have been a huge added bonus to the Red Devils, naturally a centre-back but capable of playing at right-back.
However Van Gaal will now have to look elsewhere, with a move for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen still on the cards for the former Bayern Munich manager.
