The Red Devils are thought to be on the lookout for a marquee player ahead of the looming off-season, with the funds in place to pursue a deal for one of the world’s true elite stars.
There are have been reports that Neymar is the one they want, with the club believed to have indicated a willingness to match his £145.6m release clause and hand the Brazilian £1m-per-week in wages, but a source close to both Real Madrid and Barca has told The Sun that a deal for Bale is “more likely” to happen:
“United definitely need a player like Neymar — they haven’t really had a genuine superstar since Cristiano Ronaldo or David Beckham.
“There’s no doubt the interest from them is serious, and commercially they would make the money back on him [Neymar] if they met the clause. It all comes down to whether the player wants that move.
“But United signing Bale is the more likely deal, and maybe it is time for him to move on from Madrid.
“Bale at Old Trafford seems a more natural fit.”
Bale is currently the most expensive player in the history of the sport, with Real having paid £86m to sign him from Spurs in the summer of 2013.
Although the Wales international enjoyed a fine debut season in Spain, in which he helped Los Blancos to win their 10th European Cup, his one-and-a-half campaigns since have not scaled the same heights.
