Manchester United have been dealt a big blow in their chase for Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin, with the La Liga champions demanding United pay his release clause of £28.5million, Express reports.
The Red Devils were extremely keen on signing the highly rated centre-back, with a bid of £16million on the cards to bring him to Old Trafford this January.
However it seems that Atletico do not want to sell another defensive star after already losing goalkeeper Thiabut Courtois and left-back Filipe Luis to Chelsea in the summer.
But if the Red Devils are willing to splash £28.5million for his services, then Atletico cannot stop the Uruguayan discussing a potential switch to United.
United manager Louis van Gaal has had to deal with a fair share of injuries especially in defence, and will look to strengthen the back-line in the upcoming transfer window.
Man United have won five consecutive games, with the latest result a 2-1 win over Southampton on Monday.
