Manchester United could reignite their interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan if they cannot secure a move for either Arturo Vidal or Kevin Strootman from Juventus and Roma respectively, Express reports.
The Serie A duo are placed high amongst Louis van Gaal’s potential targets, but with a move for Strootman likely to cost around £75million, United will need to think carefully before going on another spending spree.
Vidal is also likely to remain with the current Serie A champions for the time being, opting for the Red Devils to consider Gundogan as another member of their ever growing midfield force.
Despite being injured for a extended period, Van Gaal has been keeping an eye on his return to full fitness and could even see him face league opponents Cologne at the weekend.
The German central midfielder will need to be at the top of his game in order for him to win back his first team role and sees the upcoming match as a good starting point.
He told Sky Sports Deutschland: “I am now available. The plan is that I am fully integrated into the team as soon as the national players are back.
“I am assuming that I am in the squad on the weekend against FC Cologne.”
