Manchester United are set to beat Premier League rivals Chelsea and Arsenal to the signing of Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho, Express reports.
The Red Devils are planning to use Nani, currently on loan with Sporting, in a swap deal to persuade the Portuguese club to part ways with their highly-rated defensive midfielder.
Louis van Gaal has been heavily linked with a move for Carvalho since the summer, after the 22-year-old impressed for the Portugal national team during the World Cup.
And an opportunity has seemingly opened as Van Gaal is keen to get rid of Nani’s hefty £6.24million in wages as well as bring their long-term target to Old Trafford.
Sporting put a £24million price tag on Carvalho after Arsenal tried to buy him last summer, which means United could purchase the Angola-born ace for £14million assuming the valuation for Nani is £10million.
A boost for United is Carvalho’s willingness to play in either England or Spain, stating: “We all have ambitions and I hope one day to play in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish.
“It was not this year, but if I continue to do my job as I have done so, it will certainly come sooner or later.”
