Manchester United are plotting a move for Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross after their efforts to sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund is looking bleak, Daily Star reports.
The 27-year-old centre-back was part of the United academy during the early stages of his career before completing a move to Stoke.
With Louis van Gaal facing some defensive concerns at the moment, Shawcross is seen as another possible target he could bring in to add some stability to his back line.
It was believed that he was planning to sign Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar in January, but after a £12million price tag was placed on his head, he may turn to the Stoke captain instead.
A return for the current Stoke captain looks to be a real possibility because Sir Alex Ferguson negotiated a buy-back clause in his contract, tipping him as the prime candidate to join the Red Devils.
