Manchester United are now believed to be leading the chase over Arsenal in their bids to sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund and could complete the deal during the summer, Daily Mail reports.
The 26-year-old is currently rated by his club at £47million and after some disappointing results from the Bundesliga side, he may finally be open to a possible switch.
Jurgen Klopp has seen a huge fall from grace for his side who now sit 16th place in the league and could even risk relegation if he is unable to turn around their form.
However, with Dortmund still doing well in the Champions League it is unlikely that Hummels or even United will make a move in the January window with Ed Woodward confirming that he is already planning for the summer.
He said: “We are not looking to enter the market for short-term fixes.
“However we have targets that we are looking at for next summer. Should any of them become available in January – which obviously is rare – we will consider acting. But in terms of expectations-setting we all need to recognise that is a low probability.”
