Manchester United have seen their initial £35million bid to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos rejected ahead of January deadline day, Daily Star reports.
The 20-year-old is believed to be one of Louis van Gaal’s top centre-back targets this month along with Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels.
Although he is currently the third choice selection behind David Luiz and Thiago Silva, Laurent Blanc earlier revealed that if United were interested in his services, they will need to pay around £112million.
He has made 12 Ligue 1 appearances so far this season, but with his fellow countrymen occupying the two central defensive roles, it is unlikely that he will be able to secure a starting berth for the moment.
Van Gaal has been looking to reinforce his backline throughout the current campaign, as he was often forced to call up the club’s younger players to do their defensive duties.
With PSG refusing to sell the Brazilian, the Dutch manager may now wait on the outcome of their £37million bid for Hummels as the Red Devils continue their search to add some experience into their back four.
