Manchester United are planning to overtake Liverpool in the chase for Lille’s Simon Kjaer, according to reports from the Express.
The 26-year-old has been on the Reds radar in recent weeks, and has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus, Monaco, and Zenit St. Petersburg.
United’s defence has been struggling throughout the season, and with manager Louis van Gaal yet to establish his ideal back-line, £11million-rated Kjaer is seen as an option.
The Danish defender could be a more cost-efficient alternative to long-term target Mats Hummels, who is yet to decide on his future with current side Borussia Dortmund.
He has admitted that he is open to playing for a top side, but also ensured that he wants to play regular football should he complete a move.
“I’ll only leave if a top club wants me, this season or next,” he said.
“Otherwise there is no reason to leave a club of Lille’s means.
“If I do leave, stability will be important. The clubs who want me will need to show that they intend to rely on me in the long term.”
The Denmark international has made 31 appearances this season, scoring one goal, and was also named Danish Talent of the Year back in 2009.
