Manchester United are believed to be preparing to trigger the £23.5million release clause for Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez in the upcoming January transfer window, Express reports.
The 28-year-old was part of the Argentina squad that were named runners up during the World Cup when they lost in injury time against Germany.
He was linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer but then decided to extend his stay at the Portuguese club by signing a new four year contract.
It is now said that Louis van Gaal is preparing to make a move despite his extension after rumours suggest La Liga side Valencia are prepared to trigger his release clause at the beginning of next year.
Having already signed his international teammates Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo in the summer, he hopes to make it his third Argentine additional with the Dutch boss keen to let the Red Devils duo tempt him towards a switch.
The move for Perez will benefit everyone as he will cost a lot less than his two other top targets, Roma’s Kevin Strootman and Juventus’ Arturo Vital.
