Manchester United spent a massive £36million to beat the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester City to Anthony Martial from Monaco, according to reports from the Daily Mail.
Martial was heavily linked with a move away from Ligue-1 following a great debut season, but it was United who secured a deal for the young Frenchman dubbed as the ‘next Thierry Henry’.
However, the £36million United used was criticized by the media, but sources close to the Red Devils have come out claim that the purchase of the 19-year-old is a similar situation to when the club spent £12.24million on Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2003.
“Barcelona, Paris St Germain, Chelsea and City were all in on pre-contract for Martial next season,” the source said.
“We paid a premium to get him now. It is similar to what we did with Ronaldo – and that turned out OK.”
The fee could even rise to a staggering £57.6million in the future, that is if Martial manages to win the Ballon D’or.
Man United are currently struggling to score goals early in the season, and hope the addition of Martial can reinforce their attack.
Martial made 48 appearances last season, scoring 12 goals.
