Manchester United star Phil Jones is set to return to the first-team squad for this weekend’s clash against Sunderland after recovering from injury, according to reports from the Telegraph.
Jones has been struggling with a blood clot in his calf ever since the Red Devils returned from their pre-season tour in America, and has been sidelined for over a month missing the club’s first five league fixtures.
The England international was manager Louis van Gaal’s first-choice centre-back alongside Daley Blind during the tour, but has now been replaced by Chris Smalling due to his injury.
However, the 23-year-old is expected to return this weekend and challenge for a starting berth, especially with Blind now moved to left-back following Luke Shaw’s horrific leg break.
“I said last week that he was ready to train,” Van Gaal said. “And Friday was his first training session with the group. It’s nearly done, but he’s not match fit yet. It’s very early.”
United play Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, but it is unlikely that Jones will feature in order to give him some extra time to recover for the Sunderland clash.
