Saul Niguez has been earmarked as the man to fill the defensive midfield hole in Manchester United’s side, that is according to reports in the Express.
The 20-year-old has been tipped as the long-term successor for Bayern Munich’s Xabi Alonso at international level, with the former Liverpool midfielder earning a reputation as one of the finest defensive midfielders in the game.
Niguez, who scored a wonderful goal in Diego Simeone’s side’s 4-0 mauling of La Liga table-toppers Real Madrid yesterday, has become a mainstay in Atletico Madrid’s side during this campaign making 21 appearances.
With Darren Fletcher moving to West Bromwich Albion and injury concerns surrounding Michael Carrick, Louis van Gaal is willing to move in the summer for Niguez, with the Dutchman happy to pay over the £9million valuation that has been placed on the midfielder.
United have also been linked with a move for another La Liga star, with Barcelona’s Dani Alves a free agent at the end of the season.
