Manchester United are preparing a £24million move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, who is a target for Premier League rivals Arsenal as well, Telegraph reports.
United manager Louis van Gaal is also ready to offload several stars including Danny Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, and Shinji Kagawa before the close of the transfer window.
The Red Devils have been linked with a defensive midfielder all summer, but after failed attempts to sign number one target Arturo Vidal, Van Gaal has urged executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to make a move for Carvalho.
The 22-year-old was one bright spots of Portugal’s miserable World Cup campaign, as they were knocked out in the first round of the competition.
Carvalho however attracted attention long before the tournament, putting in some impressive displays for Sporting in the Primeira Liga.
The Portuguese international was initially valued at £35million by Sporting, but after European champions Real Madrid dropped their interest, the club are willing to lower their asking price to £24million.
To make room in his side, Van Gaal is pushing to find suitors for players deemed surplus to requirements.
Striker Javier Hernandez and midfielder Anderson are also set to leave the club after failing to impress their new manager over the summer.
