Manchester City will try and lure Atletico Madrid’s Mario Mandzukic to the club in January after putting a halt in their chase for £35m-rated Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse, Daily Star reports.
Manuel Pellegrini is currently without all his main attackers after injuries to Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, and Stevan Jovetic is forcing him to rethink next month’s transfer plans.
The City boss was targeting Newcastle’s Cisse to fill the injury void, but his high price tag is causing them to turn their attentions to Mandzukic, is who said to only cost about £25million.
A club source said: “The problem in attack needs solving as soon as possible and Mario is the leading target.
“It might be difficult to sign him but if anyone can do it then City can, with the funds they have at their disposal.”
However, since he only joined the La Liga side in the summer, it is likely that Diego Simeone will not let him leave so easily, especially with the 28-year-old already netting 12 goals this season.
