Manchester City turned down rival defender last summer

Manchester City turned down the chance to sign Eric Bailly for just £6million last summer, according to the Sun.

The 22-year-old, who has joined rivals Manchester United this summer for £30million, was offered to City for just a fifth of the price. But, it appears Manuel Pellegrini wasn’t convinced, and turned down the opportunity, to let him join Villarreal:

“They didn’t fancy him at the time. He wanted to bring in Aymeric Laporte but that didn’t happen and he wanted to bring in John Stones from Everton, as everyone knows. City were stunned at the £30m price tag he went for if truth be told.” said a source close to the club.

City have finally clinched the signature of John Stones, for £47.5million, more than what Bailly cost United.

However, Eric Bailly has been talking to Manchester City, as rival Yaya Toure has been helping him settle into life in Manchester. The two know each other from international duty.

Bailly had an impressive season for Villarreal, making 25 appearances in La Liga as well as 7 in the UEFA Europa League, including in their 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

The 22-year-old is expected to make his Premier League debut for United against Bournemouth on Sunday, after featuring in their 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the FA Community Shield last weekend.
