Manchester United have made an approach to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane during negotiations over David de Gea’s move, according to reports from the Express.
Real are expected to sign United goalkeeper De Gea in the coming weeks, with the clubs embroiled in transfer negotiations.
And the Red Devils found an opportunity to enquire the in regards to Varane’s availability, hoping that Real would include the France international as makeweight in the deal for De Gea.
However, the idea has been immediately rejected by the 10-time European champions, who are still confident of landing the Spain number one this summer.
Varane is also a subject of interest for Chelsea, with Blues boss Jose Mourinho a big fan of the centre-back.
The 22-year-old struggled for regular first-team football last season due to Carlo Ancelotti preferring Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the middle of defence, but could be offered more of a chance with Rafa Benitez recently appointed as the new Los Blancos manager.
