Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has urged the club to extend star midfielder Michael Carrick’s contract past the summer, according to reports from Football Insider.
Carrick has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent weeks due to his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.
Arsenal are reportedly keen on the England international midfielder, and would jump at the chance of signing him for free this summer.
However, despite Van Gaal expected to depart and replaced by Jose Mourinho, the Dutchman is demanding that the Red Devils keep Carrick for at least another term.
The central midfielder will turn 35 in June, but has been a key part of the United squad even with the likes of summer signings Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin playing in the same role.
And in recent games, Carrick has even filled in well as a centre-back, showcased by his display in their 3-2 win over the Gunners during the weekend.
The former Tottenham Hotspur youth player has made 28 appearances this season, providing one assist.
