Manchester United chief admits to transfer woe

Marouane Fellaini

New Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward has privately admitted he struggled in his first transfer window at the club, according to the Daily Mirror.

Fellow newbie David Moyes only attracted Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini to Old Trafford in a hectic deadline day in the North West.

Failed bids to sign Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao and Athletic Bilbao playmaker Ander Herrera will have been frustrating but the Premier League champions had all summer to strengthen, but ended up trying and failing on the final day of the window.

United also unsuccessfully courted Cesc Fabregas and Leighton Baines over a summer in which their rivals all significantly improved their squads.

Keeping hold of striker Wayne Rooney was the main positive to come from a drab few months at Old Trafford and the England striker now appears happy to stay with the club for the long term despite handing in a transfer request at the end of last season.
