Manchester United hit with injury blow

Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is out of today’s clash with Liverpool but is also likely to miss England’s crucial World Cup qualifiers next week, according to the Daily Mirror.

Rooney impressed on his first start for United under David Moyes in their 0-0 draw with Chelsea last week but is now set to miss over two weeks due to a gash on his forehead.

The striker picked up the nasty looking cut in an accidental challenge with fellow England international Phil Jones in training yesterday at Carrington and was taken to hospital immediately.

Rooney’s injury has thrown Moyes’ preparations for today’s game at Anfield into disarray as the former Everton boy was set to start alongside Robin van Persie back on Merseyside.

The bigger picture though sees Rooney out of England’s must win World Cup qualifiers with Moldova and Ukraine next week leaving Roy Hodgson will a huge selection dilemma.

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert could well be in line for his first ever start for his country.
