Manchester United in for World Cup winning duo

Louis Van Gaal is masterminding a double Bundelsiga plunder for two World Cup winning defenders this January, reports the Sunday Express.

Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Schalke’s Benedikt Howedes top the Manchester United boss’s hitlist this transfer window as he seeks to stabilise his side for an assault on the Premier League’s top four.

United have been linked with a large number of defensive reinforcements already this month and were hoping to persuade Raphael Varane to head to Manchester, only for Real Madrid to quash any activity.

Both Hummels and Howedes are known to be unsettled at their respective clubs – a fact which hasn’t escaped the attention of Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger – and are exploring get-out options.
