Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has defended Chelsea captain John Terry after the centre-back was dropped to the bench once again by Jose Mourinho, according to reports from the Daily Star.
Terry played every single minute in the Premier League for the Blues last season, helping the club to the title for the first time in five years.
However, the former England international has so far struggled in the current campaign, which has seen him sidelined by Mourinho in recent games.
And ‘the Special One’s decision to demote Terry has confused fans and pundits alike, with Ferdinand a firm believer that the 34-year-old still has a lot to offer for the English champions following their 2-1 loss to Porto on Wednesday.
“Looking at a couple of goals from the week I wouldn’t say he’s done,” Ferdinand said.
“I think he’s a player and I think he’s a leader.
“In situations like this when the ship needs steering a little bit on the pitch when the manager can’t be the man on the pitch I think he is someone this team has always looked to.
“And I still think he’s capable of doing that.”
The Blues are already eight points away from league leaders Manchester United and will need a positive result when Southampton visit Stamford Bridge this weekend.
Terry made 49 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring eight goals.
