Manchester United make Olympics stand

Manchester United have announced that they will not allow any of their overage players apart from Ryan Giggs to compete in this summer’s Olympic Games.

With Stuart Pearce looking to compile a squad from Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England for Team GB, a number of the current Premier League champions’ squad were thought to be in contention.

However, the statement, published by Sky Sports, confirms that the veteran Welsh midfielder will be the only player over the age 0f 23 consented to participate.

This means the likes of Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Jonny Evans will not represent Team GB, but Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could be included if they do not make England’s Euro 2012 squad.

The news will be a blow to Pearce, who will fear that other Premier League teams will start to follow suit.
