Manchester United are considering an £18.3million offer to sign Lazio star Stefan de Vrij, according to reports from the Daily Star.
United are looking to turn to De Vrij as an alternative to Real Madrid ace Sergio Ramos, who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford recently.
The Red Devils have demanded Ramos to be included in Real’s deal for David de Gea, but the La Liga giants are reluctant to let the Spain centre-back depart.
This has therefore stalled negotiations, with United now prepared to switch their attention to De Vrij instead.
The 23-year-old has already played for United boss Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands national team, featuring in every game for his manager during the 2014 World Cup.
However, United will be facing an uphill battle to lure De Vrij to Manchester, as the Dutchman previously revealed he is keen to remain at the Stadio Olimpico following a successful Serie A campaign.
“I’m happy at Lazio and I’ll still be here next year,” he said.
“I hope to play in the Champions League with this shirt, but that doesn’t determine my future. If we don’t qualify, it wouldn’t change anything – I want to stay here.
“Here in Rome, I’ve learned a lot and become a better defender.
“I’m really happy with the choice I made.”
The former Feyenoord ace played 35 games in all competitions last season, scoring one goal.
