Manchester United may have to take a step back from their chase of Mats Hummels after he revealed his happiness to remain at Borussia Dortmund, prompting Louis van Gaal to target his team mate Nevan Subotic instead, Mirror reports.
Many believed the 25-year-old German centre-back was poised for a switch to Old Trafford in the January transfer window, but based on his comments, it looks as though he is set to remain with his current club.
He told Bundesliga Magazin International: “It’s nice to hear that big clubs like that are interested in you
“I take that as a compliment. But it doesn’t influence me in any way, otherwise. We earn enough here in Dortmund.
“There will always be someone who can pay more than BVB. But Dortmund have made a lot of progress during my time here. In any case: I believe that it’s enough for me.
“If one day I start thinking about playing abroad, money won’t be the reason. But I don’t even think about that at the moment. We still have so much further to go here.”
However, with Van Gaal aiming to reinforce his defence as soon as he can, he could turn to Hummels’ team mate Subotic to add more stability to his back line and may finally his chase for the World Cup winner.
