Manchester United star Angel di Maria was too ugly to play for Real Madrid, according to former Barcelona coach Carles Rexach, Sky Sports reports.
The Argentina international became the British record signing when he arrived from Real Madrid on a £59.7million deal last summer, following an impressive campaign in which he helped the La Liga giants win the coveted Champions League trophy.
But Rexach, who used to play for Barca and coached them back in 2001, has claimed that the reason the European champions were so willing to let a player of Di Maria’s calibre leave was because he was not good looking enough for their international marketing campaign.
He said: “Florentino Perez looks at the world market and wants a team of Galacticos for everyone to admire. Do you understand what I mean?
“Ronaldo is the flagship of the club. Perez is selling an international brand. Vicente del Bosque and Di Maria are too ugly for Real Madrid. They are different from Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.”
However, Rexach has had a history of making bizarre claims, such as previously stating that Lionel Messi wasn’t at his best last season due to the fact that he ate too much pizza.
Di Maria, 27, is struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League, being substituted at half-time during the weekend in United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.
