The United stopper, who has just been called into the Spanish Under-21 squad for next month’s European Championships in Israel, claims he would be surprised if Rooney does move on and certainly wants him to stay.
Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly heading the queue for the England ace if he does decide to leave Old Trafford, although Real Madrid and Chelsea may have something to say about that as well.
Moyes knows Rooney very well from their time together at Everton after handing the player his first-team debut, and De Gea feels that will work in United’s favour, although he admits the 27-year-old’s desire to leave has come as a surprise.
The United goalkeeper told Spanish radio show El Larguero: “He looks fine to me, happy. We do not know if he will go, but we hope he stays. He is a very important player for us.”
De Gea went on to reveal that he knows very little about Moyes and what he can expect in terms of man-management, but he can’t see much changing at Old Trafford in the short term in the wake of his arrival as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor.
The former Atletico Madrid keeper added: “Really, I do not know. He did very well at Everton, was there for many years. I believe he will be more or less on the same line as our boss Alex Ferguson.”
