Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes has confirmed that Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has begun negotiations with the club over a new long-term contract, according to reports from the Guardian.
De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid over the past couple of transfer windows, with the Europeans giants keen on bringing the 24-year-old to replace veteran shot-stopper Iker Casillas at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The former Atletico Madrid star has been in brilliant form for the Red Devils this season, with fans even preferring to keep De Gea rather than exchange him for ex-Tottenham Hotspur superstar Gareth Bale.
And according to his agent Jorge Mendes, despite the January signing of former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer, he insists that De Gea is happy to remain at Old Trafford and revealed on Spanish radio that his client has already begun talks with United over extending his current contract.
“I am negotiating with Manchester United about De Gea’s renewal,” said Mendes. “It is not true that De Gea has found a deal with Real Madrid. I’m negotiating with Manchester United his extension.”
De Gea has played all 24 of Man United’s league games this season, keeping seven clean sheets.
