Manchester United are set to battle Real Madrid for the signing of Wolfsburg star Ricardo Rodriguez, according to reports from Sport Bild.
Rodriguez has been heavily linked with a move away from Volkswagen Arena since the summer, with the Swiss international a long-term target for the Red Devils ever since the 2014 World Cup.
But Rodriguez came to the fore when United first-choice left back Luke Shaw broke his leg in the Champions League, with manager Louis van Gaal still struggling to find a consistent replacement for the Englishman.
However, Man United will have some major competition from Real Madrid, who are themselves hoping to provide some adequate cover for Brazil star Marcelo.
Rodriguez’s contract may be running until 2019, but the 23-year-old has a £23million release clause that if triggered, will allow interested clubs to open negotiations in regards to a potential transfer.
The former FC Zurich ace made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.
