Manchester United are poised to beat Chelsea to the £15million signing of Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, according to the Daily Express.
United are in the market for a new centre back this summer, whilst Chelsea are also on the lookout for competition for John Terry and Gary Cahill.
Louis van Gaal has made a defender his top priority, having been forced to call on youngster Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett this season.
And reports in Spain suggest van Gaal is set for a reunion from Pique, who he managed during his spell at Barcelona.
The 27-year-old started his career at Barcelona, before moving to United in 2004 having been spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pique then returned to the Nou Camp in 2008 for a bargain £5million, and has gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s top defenders, winning all there is to win on both the domestic and international stage.
United are expected to table a £15million bid for him before the close of the transfer window, and are confident they will beat Chelsea to his signature, given they are able to offer guaranteed first team football at Old Trafford.
