Manchester United manager David Moyes is set to move for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, according to the Guardian.
United were rejected by Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas this week who reiterated his desire to stay with his boyhood club and so have switched to Spanish rivals Real Madrid in order to solve their issues in the middle of the park.
Moyes is not happy with the quality of midfield men to partner Michael Carrick for the Premier League champions and the likes of Tom Cleverley, Anderson and Shinji Kagawa are set to play bit-part roles again this season.
The former Everton boss was desperate to bring Fabregas to Old Trafford but has finally given up that ghost and made an enquiry for Modric.
The former Tottenham midfielder came into his own at the tail end of last season, becoming a key player for the capital club.
Real Madrid may be happy to offload one of their big name midfielders to free up the cash to bring Gareth Bale to Spain.
