Manchester United have been updated in their chase for former captain Nemanja Vidic, Express reports.
Inter Milan have recently rehired Roberto Mancini after sacking Walter Mazzarri and the former Man City boss is set to re-evaluate Vidic’s Nerrazurri future.
The Serbian international made a free transfer from Man United at the end of last season but has failed to impress fans and critics, which has fuelled rumours of a return to Old Trafford with the Red Devils troubled by an injury crisis.
Louis van Gaal has been forced to field central midfielder Michael Carrick and youngster Paddy McNair at centre-back, and could do with a veteran in Vidic once again leading the back-line.
Vidic’s future is thus under intense scrutiny before the transfer window opens in January but is set to be given a chance by Mancini, starting with Inter’s derby clash against AC Milan this weekend.
The Premier League-winning manager will be reverting Mazzarri’s preferred three-man backline to a traditional four at the back system, which is the formation Vidic has been used to throughout his career.
However due to Inter’s abundance of young and talented centre-defenders, an under-par Vidic could be released by Mancini in January.
