Manchester Utd and Liverpool to scrap it out for playmaker

Defour to United in January is a realistic targetManchester United and Liverpool are preparing to lock horns in a battle for much sort after Standard Liege captain Steven Defour, according to Talksport.

The Belgian International has been heavily tipped to make the move away from the Jupiler Pro League this summer. Other clubs from across Europe, such as Benfica and Napoli, have also shown an interest in Standard’s influential midfielder, but Manchester or Liverpool would be Defour’s most probable destination.

Defour is already rated as one of, if not the best, midfielder in Belgium and at 23 years old he is likely to carry a price tag somewhere in the region of £15 million. A price that is unlikely to deter either Sir Alex Ferguson or Kenny Dalglish.

The 2007 Belgian shoe winner has been on Man United’s radar for sometime now. Sir Alex Ferguson may well be in pole position for the Belgian’s signature after he sent the player a letter wishing him well in his recovery from a broken foot in 2009.

Defour who was made Standard’s skipper at 19 years old would be a welcome addition to the Manchester United midfield line, particularly when considering  Michael Carrick’s run of poor form, Owen Hargreaves injury nightmares and Paul Scholes being in the twilight of his career.
