Martinez impressed, Holloway furious

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez was left impressed after his side climbed out of the relegation zone in beating Blackpool 3-1.Goals from Hugo Rodallega, Charles N’Zogbia and Mohammed Diame were enough to hand Martinez’s side the three points and instil optimism in the relegation-threatened outfit.

And the Spaniard drew positives from his players’ performance despite being under enormous pressure to perform.

“It is a massive win for us, but our focus was on the performance because sometimes in these big games, you need to get the three points and that can affect the display,” Martinez told Sky Sports.

“The performance from the players was very good. I don’t think there has been a team that kept Blackpool as quiet as we have all season. “

“In that respect, we have just carried on with what we have shown in the last eight games, but it’s important to win football games and we finally got our reward.”

Martinez also praised the losing side, who struck a consolation goal through DJ Campbell.

“Even with a two-goal lead against Blackpool, you know you have to score three goals to win the game and that is a tribute to how refreshing Blackpool have been this season.”

“The goal at the end was a little bit of a disappointment but I couldn’t be prouder of the players.”

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway was furious after two defensive blunders cost his side the game and possibly their top flight status.

“It’s just unbelievable,” Holloway said.

“We might as well have got a shotgun and blown off both of our feet.”

Poor defending from Craig Cathcart gifted the Latics the opening goal while the second goal was also a product of a lapse in concentration.

“We’re in a fantastic position to put them under pressure and one of the young players made a decision to go and pass the ball and then he passed it to one of their forwards and he slipped.”
