Pundit Paul Merson has predicted that Manchester City will beat rivals Manchester United in tomorrow’s local derby clash, which will all but rule the Red Devils out of the race for the top four.
The bitter enemies both have a lot to play for, with the Citizens not guaranteed a Champions League qualification berth after poor recent domestic form.
United meanwhile have undergone a tough campaign under Louis van Gaal, with elimination from the Europa League at the hands of Liverpool a tough pill to swallow for the Old Trafford faithful.
The Dutch coach is in dire need of a positive result at the Etihad Stadium, which would close the gap between his team and division leaders.
Merson has been critical of United in recent weeks and is not displaying much faith in them this weekend.
The former Arsenal midfielder has stated that he believes City will be too good for their opponents.
“Manchester City have to win this game,” Merson wrote on Sky Sports.
“It’s all becoming very tight in the race for the top four and Manuel Pellegrini’s men are really struggling at the moment.
“The injuries to Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi are a big blow, however, I see home advantage being key in this game.
“Manchester United also have injury problems and a tough game against Liverpool won’t help their chances. I see City just edging this one 2-1.”
