Manchester United will secure a spot in the group stage of the 2017-18 Champions League if they beat Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
Finishing sixth in the Premier League will have hurt head coach Jose Mourinho, however, and it is widely expected that the Portuguese will splash the cash this summer.
At least one new forward should arrive at Old Trafford in this summer’s transfer window, and according to former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson, Mourinho should make a move for Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane.
The England international again finished top of the scoring charts in the Premier League with 29 goals for the 2016-17 campaign, and Merson has claimed that Kane would be a better option than Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.
Merson told Sky Sports:
“Will United go in for Harry Kane? In my opinion, I think United should go for Kane over Antoine Griezmann. I’d want a player who is proven and has scored goals in this league.
“I’m a big fan of Griezmann, but this is a different league, and I don’t think Man Utd can get this wrong and wait another year. It’s important that Mourinho buys players that are proven in this league.”
Kane, 23, has scored 99 times in just 165 appearances for Tottenham, and ended this season with 35 goals in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Spurs will, of course, be desperate to keep hold of Kane as they look to build a team around the forward, but Merson has suggested that Man United would be able to poach the 17-time England international.
