Miccoli snubs Blues interest

Birmingham City have missed out on the signing of former Italy international forward Fabrizio Miccoli, after the player opted to stay with current club Palermo.

The diminutive 30-year-old former Juventus and Benfica frontman had been a major summer target for the Blues, but Miccoli is set to remain in Sicily after talks with club owner Maurizio Zamparini.

"Fabrizio Miccoli will remain at Palermo," Zamparini told reterete24.it.

"Yesterday I met with Miccoli and reiterated the esteem and confidence of our club in him. He was a bit worried about the knee injury he sustained.

"But I told him to stay because we consider him a key part of the project. I saw that he became much more comfortable."

Palermo's sporting director Walter Sabatini added:"Palermo do not want to sell the player. Miccoli is essential for us and it is important that we do not lose him.

"But it is equally important that everyone is happy."

Miccoli, who has won ten caps for Italy in the past, joined Palermo in the summer of 2007 and has since scored 41 goals in 87 Serie A appearances.
