Michael Dawson given chance to impress

Tottenham will give Michael Dawson a chance to impress by fielding him against Carlisle in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.

The England international has been deemed as surplus to requirements by Andre Villas-Boas, and was close to a switch to QPR in the summer transfer market.

However, Spurs assistant coach Steffen Freund has stated that Dawson has a chance to impress the White Hart Lane hierarchy in midweek.

“The most important thing is how he reacts and he likes to play for Tottenham,” The Sun quote the German as saying.

“When you are a strong club like Tottenham there are a lot of opportunities. Andre said that from the beginning of the season.

“It is difficult for him because he’s the captain and had an offer from QPR. We are always positive from that point and we talked about it openly.

“The players who are involved at Carlisle have to play well because we have a strong squad,” he concluded.

Steven Caulker is also expected to play, and Freund feels that the youngster has the ability to replace John Terry in the England set-up.

“Definitely possible. He has been called up for the national side. He’s one of best centre halves in England right now. He’s similar to Terry.

“He is like a rock in the defence, he’s very tall and strong and is difficult to beat in a one-to-one situation,” he concluded.
