Middlesbrough hosted Brighton at the Riverside this afternoon and it was as spectacularly dramatic as we would’ve expected.
Aitor Karanka was involved in a bit of in and out at Boro the other week, before ending up retaining his job. He’ll be damn glad he’s stuck with the club now as they nipped Brighton to promotion as they drew 1-1. A controversial red card set Brighton back – with Gaston Ramirez left with a nasty gash – and it was pretty plain sailing for Karanka from there.
Burnley confirmed their status as Championship winners, too, as Andre Gray starred once again for them to pick up yet another win and Sean Dyche can rightfully revel in the praise. Karanka and Dyche will be thinking about how to deal with Sergio Aguero, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial next season, whilst Chris Hughton must prepare for the tricky play-offs.
Hull, who had threatened to compete for the top two places, drubbed Rotherham 5-1 as they finish the season in fourth place and will now look towards their play-off tie with Derby County, whilst Sheffield Wednesday will face Brighton.
The Championship is possibly the most competitive league in the world and they will be prepared to welcome three more Premier League clubs next season. Can Aston Villa fight back? Or will they slump down into League One like so many clubs have done before?
At least we have the play-offs to keep us entertained and two of those four will get a Wembley appearance…
