More doping disgrace for North Korea

Three more North Korea players have failed doping tests at the FIFA Women’s World Cup after closer scrutiny of the national squad. The trio, who have not been named, tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid after the North Korea women’s squad was selected for target testing.

The measure came after Jong Sun Song and Sim Pok Jong returned positive samples prior to the side’s match with Colombia last Friday.

“Adverse analytical findings have been recorded in the anti-doping tests of three additional players from Korea DPR, following target testing of the whole team which participated in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” a statement from FIFA read.

“As the proceedings are still in progress, FIFA will not disclose the names of the three players whose test results have produced adverse analytical findings, in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code.”

Under FIFA guidelines, a team is required to submit to testing if two or more players test positive during a tournament.

North Korea were bundled out of World Cup group stages without scoring. Japan will take on the United States in the final on Sunday.
