Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is confident that this season will stand the Red Devils in good stead as they look to challenge for the major honours once again.

The 20-time English champions have been in a transitional period since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013, with David Moyes and Louis van Gaal both struggling to deliver at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has made an impact at Man United this term, however, with the Red Devils currently in the semi-finals of the Europa League, and battling for a top-four spot in the Premier League.

The Portuguese, however, has claimed that it 'does not matter' whether League Cup holders Man United win any more silverware this season as the signs for the future are extremely positive.

He told Sky Sports News:

"It doesn't matter what happens in terms of titles we win or don't win. I always feel that the season is very important for me, the players and the club.

"I would say this can be the first season of the next five or six or seven. It can be the first season of better years.

"And the reality is even in the first season of better years we won already and we have already the chance to do good things until the end of the season."

"If we manage to win the Europa League and in August to play the European Super Cup against the Champions League winner, it will be magnificent."

Man United are currently fifth in the Premier League table - one point behind fourth-place Manchester City ahead of their meeting at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.
