Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new central defender before the transfer window closes according to The Manchester Evening News.
The Portuguese trainer has added Eric Bailly to his contingent this summer, with the African enforcer moving to Old Trafford from Spanish side Villarreal.
However, with the new recruit not tested at the highest level, Mourinho is believed to be monitoring the situation of a couple of top-class central defenders.
The report suggests that Juventus stalwart Leonardo Bonucci and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane are in the United manager’s sights ahead of another big-money summer move.
Mourinho coached Varane during their mutual time at Real Madrid and was the man to give the French defender a consistent chance in the Spanish capital.
Bonucci has also been linked with Chelsea and Manchester City this summer and is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the world game.
