Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has lavished praise on Axel Tuanzebe after the defender impressed on his Premier League debut against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Tuanzebe, 19, made his first-team debut for the Red Devils in the FA Cup against Wigan Athletic earlier this season, but he tasted league action for the first time at the weekend after starting at the Emirates Stadium.

Man United suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Gunners as their top-four hopes faded, but Tuanzebe gained widespread praise for his performance at right-back.

Mourinho has revealed that the teenager's work ethic since stepping into the first-team set-up in January made him a viable option at this stage of the season.

Mourinho told MUTV:

“[Tuanzebe was] very good, very solid. He did his work for years in the academy and he joined the first-team squad in January so he's had January, February, March and April, four months working with us, adapting to a different reality. So I was sure that he was ready."

Sunday's clash at the Emirates also saw 20-year-old midfielder Scott McTominay make his Premier League debut for Man United as Mourinho rested players ahead of the second leg of their Europa League semi-final at home to Celta Vigo on Thursday night.
