Napoli are believed to have ended their pursuit of Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini after the midfielder picked up an ankle injury the previous week, Metro reports.
The 26-year-old Belgium international is currently considered a United flop after he was dubbed as a panic buy under former manager David Moyes, and has been failing to impress despite being given a lot of opportunities.
Fellaini was seen leaving a hospital in crutches and the Serie A side are now unwilling to gamble on his fitness given his £100,000-a-week salary.
They were close to completing a season-long loan move for the central midfielder as Louis van Gaal revealed that he was facing an Old Trafford exit.
The 63-year-old manager is instead turning to Dutch duo Nigel de Jong and Daley Blind to fill the anchorman role, but will need to be quick on negotiations with only a week left until transfer deadline day.
However, the former Everton star wants to be given another chance to impress his new manager, with the Red Devils still struggling to make a mark in the new campaign.
