Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is hoping that new summer signings Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao can help him persuade Real Madrid star Fabio Coentrao to join them at Old Trafford this January, Express reports.
Coentrao was a £24million purchase from Benfica back in the summer of 2011, but the Portuguese international is still behind Marcelo in the left-back pecking order.
And with Real manager Carlo Ancelotti keen to sign a new left-sided defender, Coentrao is set to be offloaded to make room.
The 26-year-old has only played three games for the European champions so far in the campaign, and United boss Van Gaal seems keen to offer him an exit route away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite the new £30million signing of Luke Shaw from Southampton, reports suggests that the Dutch manager isn’t impressed with the young Englishman and could swap his potential for Coentrao’s experience.
Van Gaal is therefore turning to Di Maria and Falcao – who share the same agent with Coentrao in Jorge Mendes – to help convince the ‘Los Blancos’ ace to join his squad.
Coentrao has made a total of 86 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring only one goal.
