Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has claimed that a number of Manchester United’s players ‘went missing’ during Sunday’s Premier League clash at St James’ Park.
Matt Ritchie scored the only goal of the match as Newcastle picked up a huge three points at home to the Red Devils.
Man United had a number of chances to register during the 90 minutes, but Anthony Martial missed their best chance of the first period, before a host of late opportunities were not taken.
Lascelles found Romelu Lukaku difficult to deal with during stages of the match, but the centre-back ultimately helped his team keep a clean sheet.
The Magpies captain has accused Man United of shirking their responsibilities during the match, and also took the chance to have a pop at opposing centre-backs Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
Lascelles told Sky Sports:
“I don’t think they were at it from the start of the game – a lot of their players went missing. It was probably the way we were playing, we made them play like that.
“In the first half they were making a lot of mistakes, passing the ball around but it was down to our pressing.
“We were aggressive, and they didn’t like it. You could see their centre-halves on the ball and they didn’t really know what to do with it.
The win over Man United moved Newcastle into 13th position in the table, although Rafael Benitez’s side are only two points clear of 18th-placed Southampton.
