Newcastle United are in more trouble following news that Aleksandar Mitrovic is set to miss a number of matches through injury, Goal.com reports.
The 21-year-old has been a key player for manager Steve McClaren up top this season, but has now been ruled out after damaging his medial knee ligament.
Mitrovic has been left out of the travelling squad that was on their way to La Manga to undergo their warm weather training camp.
McClaren revealed that he expects the striker to be out for a couple of weeks, meaning that he is expected to miss vital league matches against Stoke City, Bournemouth, and maybe Leicester City as well.
“Mitro has a medial ligament injury, so it could be a couple of weeks – we’re hoping not too long,” he told NUFC TV.
The Magpies are desperate to pick up points given that they are currently battling relegation as they sit in 18th place, level on points with Norwich City in 17th and three behind Swansea City in 16th.
Mitrovic has already featured in 22 Premier League matches for his side this term, so far managing to score five goals while providing another two assists.
