According to reports from The Liverpool Echo, Newcastle United have joined Everton in the race to sign Coventry City youngster Bassala Sambou.
The 18-year-old has made just one senior appearance for the League One outfit – an FA Cup outing in November – but a return of 25 goals at youth level this season is attracting transfer interest from top flight clubs.
Indeed, amid news the prodigious striker is refusing to sign professional terms at the Ricoh Arena, Everton were linked with a summer swoop for Sambou earlier this week.
Liverpool Echo have documented their interest once again but claim Premier League rivals Newcastle United are ready to contest the Merseysiders for the teenager’s signature.
Although Sambou can technically leave on a free transfer, any move to the Premier Lague would oblige his suitors to pay a compensation fee decided by a tribunal.
Everton play hosts to Southampton in the Premier League this weekend, whilst Newcastle United entertain Swansea City at St. James’ Park.
